HISTORY

Leeds' former name was Loidis, and it did not become a city until the Royal Charter in 1893. From 17th to 18th century, it had successfully transformed itself into an enormously prosperous market town. The strategic location that granted the city access to roads and rivers enabled it to develop a textile trade that was to become Leeds' perpetual legacy. On the other hand, the industrial transformation had also brought about urbanization, overcrowding and poor living condition that gave the city an unpleasant reputation. However, in the first half of the 20th century, a plan to redevelop the city was devised and enacted that helped bring about the city's renaissance. Many former run-down industrial premises have been turned into intriguing tourist facilities, and the Leeds United soccer team enjoys a worldwide appeal. Furthermore, presently the city is recognized as the UK's second largest metropolitan district as well.
